Life

After attending grammar schools in Salzburg , Hall in Tirol and Feldkirch and working as a farmhand and lumberjack , Andreas Thaler bought his own farm in 1910.

From 1914 to 1919 he was the mayor of Oberau and from 1919 a member of the Tyrolean state parliament . From 1919 to 1921 he was chairman of the Tyrolean Anti-Semite Association . 1929–1932 he was chairman of the Reichsbauernbundes . From 1927 until the " self-elimination of parliament " in 1933 he was a member of the National Council for the Christian Social Party . From January 15, 1926 to May 4, 1929 and from September 30, 1930 to March 18, 1931, he was Federal Minister for Agriculture and Forestry in five cabinets .

Due to the economic hardship of many Tyrolean farmers, Thaler had the plan of a closed Austrian Catholic settlement in South America and undertook several trips to Latin America to find a suitable location. Ultimately, the choice fell on the southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina , where there were already several settlements with German-speaking immigrants, such as Blumenau , Pomerode and Joinville . There he founded Treze Tilias - Dreizehn Linden.

In 1933 the families were transported via the port of Genoa . After initial difficulties, the settlement stabilized and a school and a church could be built in the first few years. In a flood in 1939, Andreas Thaler died under circumstances that had not yet been fully clarified. His descendants still live and work in the jungle settlement. His grandchildren are known throughout Brazil for making wood carvings.
