Nikolaus Berlakovich (born June 4, 1961 in Eisenstadt ) is an Austrian farmer and politician ( ÖVP ) and belongs to the Burgenland-Croatian ethnic group. Berlakovich was a member of the Burgenland state parliament from 1991 to 2005 and, from 2005, the regional councilor for agriculture and the environment in the Niessl II state government in Burgenland . In the Faymann I cabinet, Berlakovich held the position of Federal Minister for Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management .

Nikolaus Berlakovich attended elementary school in Nebersdorf and then switched to the natural science high school in Oberpullendorf , where he graduated from high school in 1979. He then studied agriculture (plant production) at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna and graduated in 1985 with the academic degree Dipl.-Ing. from. During his studies he became a member of the Catholic student union KaV Austro-Peisonia zu Vienna and, later, the AV Austro-Ferrea zu Eisenstadt, in the ÖCV .

politics

Nikolaus Berlakovich has been a member of Großwarasdorf's municipal council since 1987 and was the municipality's first deputy mayor from 1987 to 2002. Since 1990 he has been the district farmers' union chairman in the Oberpullendorf district and district party chairman deputy. In 1991 he was elected regional party chairman of the ÖVP Burgenland . From 1998 to 2000 he worked as the ÖVP regional manager.

Berlakovich was also involved as a farmer in the farmers' union, was deputy regional farmers' union from 1995 and was elected regional chairman of the Burgenland farmers' union on January 28, 2006. As a Burgenland Croat , Berlakovich also campaigned for ethnic group politics and was chairman of the working group of Croatian local politicians in Burgenland from 1993 to 1998, and has been its honorary chairman since 1998.

Nikolaus Berlakovich was a member of the Burgenland Landtag from 1991 to 2005 and headed the Landtag Club from 2002 to 2005 as club chairman. He was the national group spokesman for the ÖVP parliamentary group. On May 19, 2005, he was elected as regional councilor in the Burgenland regional government. His portfolio included the areas of agriculture and forestry, water and waste management as well as nature and environmental protection.

From December 2, 2008, he was in charge of agriculture, forestry, the environment and water management in the Faymann I federal government as the direct successor to Josef Pröll .

In 2010, Berlakovich hit the headlines for an alleged fit of rage at Paris airport after missing a connecting flight due to a weather-related delay. Berlakovich was subsequently quoted by the media as saying "The Austrian embassy in Paris is a mess". Even his party distanced itself from his behavior.

At the beginning of 2013 there were calls for his resignation after he refused to approve the EU Commission's proposal to ban pesticides that are toxic to bees .

In the government negotiations after the 2013 National Council election , the ÖVP leadership made it clear that Berlakovich would no longer belong to the next cabinet. His term of office as minister ended on December 16, 2013 with the appointment of the federal government Faymann II , but Berlakovich remained a member of the National Council and received a new mandate as a result of the 2017 National Council election .

In November 2017 it was announced that Berlakovich would be the top candidate of the farmers' union in the election of the Burgenland State Chamber of Agriculture in March 2018. In the event of an election as chairman of the chamber, Berlakovich announced that he would remain in the National Council and waive the salary of the President of the Chamber of Agriculture. In April 2018, he was unanimously elected President of the Burgenland Chamber of Agriculture to succeed Franz Stefan Hautzinger.

Private

Nikolaus Berlakovich is married and has two children. He lives in Nebersdorf, Großwarasdorf municipality .
