Leonore Gewessler
Leonore Gewessler (born September 15, 1977 in Graz ) is an Austrian politician ( Die Grünen ), political scientist and environmental activist .
From 2014 to 2019 she was managing director of the environmental organization Global 2000 .
Since January 2020 she has been Federal Minister for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology of the Republic of Austria ( Federal Government Short II ).
Education and political career
Gewessler attended elementary school in the East Styrian municipality of Sankt Marein bei Graz and the Wirtschaftskundliche Bundesrealgymnasium Graz (WIKU). She studied political science with a focus on international development at the University of Vienna . Gewessler worked in Vienna's 7th district of Neubau as the office manager of the district council. There she was concerned with sustainable urban development and citizen participation. From 2008 to 2014 she was the founding director of the Green European Foundation (GEF) in Brussels, a European political foundation funded by the European Parliament .
From June 2014 she worked for the environmental protection organization Global 2000 in Vienna and was responsible for the areas of campaigns, sustainability and public relations as political director (until 2019). She fought for the preservation of the constitutional provision on comprehensive environmental protection and called for an agricultural policy that “brings us in Austria and Europe away from the dependence on chemical-synthetic pesticides in the field.” She was a leader in the European citizens' initiative Stop Glyphosat . Other fields of activity were protests against coal- fired power generation in Austria and against the Mochovce nuclear power plant . In 2017, with Global 2000, she supported the referendum against the trade agreements CETA and TTIP , which was signed by 562,552 Austrians.
She was a member of the advisory board of the Green Education Workshop in Austria and from 2009 to 2018 a member of the General Assembly of the Heinrich Böll Foundation in Germany. She also worked for Friends of the Earth Europe . Due to the incompatibility of a political office with a function at Global 2000, Gewessler left the environmental protection organization in mid-June 2019.
Leonore Gewessler was elected to second place on the Upper Austrian state list of the Greens in the 2019 National Council election in Austria on June 29, 2019 . On July 6, 2019, it was voted second on the federal list with 99.52 percent. From October 23, 2019 she was a member of the National Council for the 27th legislative period .
She was part of the exploratory and negotiation team of the Greens when the government was formed in Austria in 2019 with the ÖVP. On January 7, 2020, she was sworn in with the Federal Government Kurz II as Federal Minister for Transport, Innovation and Technology. After the planned changes to the responsibilities in the 1986 Federal Ministry Act had been implemented by the turquoise-green government, Gewessler was again sworn in as Federal Minister for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology on January 29th .
