Erwin Lanc

Erwin Lanc (born May 17, 1930 in Vienna ) is a former Austrian politician ( SPÖ ). As the successor to Willibald Pahr and predecessor of Leopold Gratz, he was the ninth Foreign Minister of the Second Republic, having previously served as Minister of Transport and Interior in the Federal Government . Lanc was also President of the International Institute for Peace in Vienna from 1989 to 2008 .

After elementary school he attended secondary school and passed the Matura in 1948 . He then studied law at the University of Vienna . From 1949 to 1955 he was a contract employee in the Federal Ministry for Social Administration . Then he was federal secretary of the Austrian Youth Hostel Association until 1959 , then a bank clerk in the Zentralsparkasse and Kommerzialbank in Vienna, where he was appointed managing director of the information center for municipal financing.

In 1966 he was district party chairman of the SPÖ Vienna / Margareten and regional party chairman deputy of the SPÖ Vienna.

Political career

Erwin Lanc was a member of the Vienna State Parliament and member of the Vienna City Council from 1960 to 1966 and a member of the National Council from March 30, 1966 to June 24, 1970 and from October 19, 1970 to May 31, 1983 (legislative period XI.-XVI.). From September 17, 1973 to June 8, 1977 he was Federal Minister of Transport under Chancellor Bruno Kreisky , from June 8, 1977 to May 24, 1983 Federal Minister of the Interior (Kreisky Cabinet), from May 24, 1983 to September 10, 1984 Federal Minister for Foreign affairs under Federal Chancellor Fred Sinowatz . Lanc was a member of Club 45 and was involved in the Lucona affair . After leaving the government, he was under discussion as the future mayor and governor of Vienna, but had to give way to Helmut Zilk .

Erwin Lanc was Vice President of the Working Group for Sport and Physical Culture in Austria (ASKÖ) and for many years President of the Austrian Handball and Fistball Association (1977–1993) and President of the International Handball Federation (1984–2000).

Since his retirement from day-to-day politics, Erwin Lanc, u. a. from 1989 to 2008 as President of the International Institute for Peace , especially for international peace and the dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians. Lanc has been honorary president of the International Institute for Peace since the end of 2008 .
