Walter Breisky
Walter Breisky (born July 8, 1871 in Bern , Switzerland ; † September 25, 1944 in Klosterneuburg , Lower Austria by suicide ) was an Austrian civil servant and politician .
Life
Walter Breisky studied law and began his civil service career in 1895 as a concept officer in the Lower Austrian Lieutenancy. In 1905 he became a consultant for Protestant cult in the Ministry of Education, and from 1907 he worked in the press department of the Presidium of the Council of Ministers. In 1919 he became section head .
On July 7, 1920, Breisky was elected to the Mayr I state government as State Secretary (= Minister) for Interior and Education via the party list of the Christian Social Party of Austria (CS) . According to Ignaz Seipel , the department to which the CS is entitled should be occupied by a trusted expert who, however, has to lead it as an "impartial official". From 1920 to 1922 he was - formally as a representative of the Christian Socials - entrusted with the office of Vice Chancellor and with the management of the Ministry of the Interior and Education.
He acted for a day, on April 26-27. January 1922, as Federal Chancellor and 1923–1931 as President of the Federal Statistical Office .
In 1926 he was elected to the board of the Pan-European Movement .
Walter Breisky was temporarily arrested by the Gestapo in September 1944 after his housekeeper denounced him "for listening to the enemy broadcaster BBC ". After returning to his house in Klosterneuburg near Vienna, the former politician put an end to his life the next day. He was buried in the Upper City Cemetery in Klosterneuburg.
