Michael Gehler (born January 15, 1962 in Innsbruck ) is an Austrian historian . Since 2006 he has been teaching as Professor of Modern German and European History and Head of the Institute for History at the University of Hildesheim . He is one of the most profound experts on the European integration process .

Live and act

The son of an insurance salesman graduated from the Arnold-Gymnasium Neustadt in 1981 and studied history and German at the Leopold-Franzens-Universität Innsbruck from 1981 to 1987 . From 1992 to 1996 he was a Research Fellow of the Fund for the Promotion of Scientific Research (FWF) Vienna . In 1999 Gehler completed his habilitation at the University of Innsbruck , where he was an associate professor at the Institute for Contemporary History until 2006. In 2001/02 he was an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow. Between 2004 and 2005 Gehler was also a visiting professor at the Universities of Rostock (2004), Salzburg (2004/05) and Löwen (2005).

Since 2006 he has been teaching as professor and head of the Institute for History at the University of Hildesheim . Since 2008 he has been a corresponding member of the Philosophical-Historical Class of the Austrian Academy of Sciences . The EU Commission awarded him a “Jean Monnet Chair” for European History, which was followed in 2011 by the renewed award of a Jean Monnet ad personam Chair . In 2012, he turned down an offer at the University of Innsbruck for a professorship in contemporary history. In 2013 Gehler accepted a call to head the Institute for Modern and Contemporary History Research (INZ) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna while retaining his professorship at the University of Hildesheim. In February 2014 he took on a visiting professorship at the Faculty of European Studies at the Babeș-Bolyai University Cluj-Napoca ( Klausenburg ) as part of the “Cultural Diplomacy and International Relations” program and in March at the Ege Üniversitesi in Izmir as part of the Erasmus lecturer exchange and the partnership with the University of Hildesheim. For the years 2016 to 2019, he was awarded the Jean Monnet ad-personam-Chair by the European Commission for the third time for the Institute for History of the University of Hildesheim Foundation. He has been married since 1994 and has four children.

Gehler conducts research on Austrian, German and European contemporary history . The main research areas are regional history with special consideration of the South Tyrolean question as well as international relations with special consideration of European integration. Gehler has received numerous scientific honors and memberships for his research. He was awarded the Ludwig Jedlicka Memorial Prize in Vienna (1988), the Dr. Wilfried Haslauer Research Prize in Salzburg (1994), the Theodor Körner Foundation Prize for the Promotion of Science and Art in Vienna 1994, the Cardinal Innitzer Promotion Prize in Vienna 1996 and the Prize of the State Capital for Scientific Research at the University of Innsbruck in 2001. He was an Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellow from 2001 to 2002 at the University of Bonn. He was awarded the Karl von Vogelsang State Prize Vienna (2004) and the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art (2011).
