European Studies

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

European Studies (German: Europastudien , Europäische Studien or Europawwissenschaften , French: Études Européennes ) is an interdisciplinary science and a course of study that is offered primarily by universities in the EU member states , but also by universities in other countries and continents. There are over 300 European science courses in the European Union.

term

The terms European Studies, European Studies, European Studies, European Science (s) are used inconsistently, usually the same thing is meant. Each university designates the courses differently and is free to choose the designation. The English “European Studies” is used internationally.

history

The emergence of European science cannot be clearly dated. Since the investigation of geographically distinct, European issues could have been part of science at any time, the question arises as to when an independent awareness of the discipline emerged. While exact dates are possible in jurisprudence with the emergence of European law, this is more difficult in the humanities and social sciences. With the deeper European integration, the need for specialized specialists and scientists increased.

Subject of research

Depending on the orientation of the degree programs, research at the universities is set up very differently. In the broadest sense, European studies in research and teaching deals with the geographically limited subject of Europe . In a narrower sense, European integration in general and the European Union in particular are dealt with.

While in Chemnitz with the Institute for European Studies there are five chairs in the fields of cultural studies, law and human geography, which are explicitly dedicated to European studies, there is no dedicated superordinate institute or exclusive chairs at the University of Passau, but a Jean Monnet chair in Political science. In Magdeburg, on the other hand, the professors are distributed among different institutes, but with the professorship for European Studies there is a quasi-staff position.

At the University of Karlsruhe , the focus is on cultural studies. At the University of Passau , students can choose their own focus. You can choose between cultural and social sciences. In the field of cultural studies, you select a cultural area and in the field of social sciences you can choose from history, politics, geography, art history and mediality research. Where the focus is ultimately placed and in which subject the thesis is to be written is up to the students. At the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt , the interdisciplinary European course examines cross-European cultural-historical developments with a focus on literature and linguistics, as well as other sub-disciplines of cultural studies.

In Bremen and at the Viadrina in Frankfurt / Oder , the focus is on transformation processes in Eastern Europe, in Rome the EU's relations with the countries in the Mediterranean region. In Maastricht , political, economic and commercial law aspects are in the foreground.

At the University of Bonn ( Center for European Integration Research ), the English-language postgraduate course "Master of European Studies - Governance and Regulation" is based on the interrelationships between politics and law in the European Union (explicitly with an EU-wide perspective). Professors and experts from all parts of the EU teach in the ZEI course. The course combines basic scientific training with strong practical relevance and builds bridges to the worldwide network of ZEI alumni. The career prospects of graduates of the "Master of European Studies - Governance and Regulation" from the Center for European Integration Research (ZEI) are above average.

The master's program European Integration in East Central Europe at the University of Leipzig deals with the integration and Europeanization of economy and politics within the EU as well as the internationalization of political and economic processes since the end of the 20th century. Another focus is the acquisition of specialist knowledge about the process of economic and political integration and transformation in Central and Eastern European countries. The MA degree is more practice-oriented and prepares specifically for entrepreneurial, political, journalistic or social activities in East Central Europe or in Context of the European Union.

Interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity

At all universities it is an interdisciplinary course. Therefore, research projects in European studies are usually interdisciplinary. Methods from independent individual sciences are applied to the same issue, for example European integration .

The concept of transdisciplinarity is unclear . The Institute for European Studies in Chemnitz presents itself as interdisciplinary, while the website europastudien.de, which is also operated by the institute, describes European studies as transdisciplinary.

Since there is still no uniform definition of transdisciplinarity, this description should not be used.

Jean Monnet Chair

The Jean Monnet program of the European Commission is an honor and a support program for departments of universities. This award, awarded by the European Commission, not only requires excellent teaching, but also outstanding research activities. The research work of the chair focuses on all matters relating to European integration.

Through the funding, teaching and research activities at the workplace can be expanded and supplemented with events and a separate series of working papers.

The Jean Monnet Chair supports teaching in a variety of ways. For example, additional funds are made available for book purchases, travel expenses, etc. On the other hand, the foundation for excellent teaching is indirectly laid by promoting research activities, exchange and networking as well as the publication of results.

At the same time, however, the broader population should also be given access to European policy issues. The Jean Monnet Chair regularly offers public events for this purpose. The Jean Monnet Chair is awarded for a period of 3 years. The chair can be held by professors who hold a minimum of 90 teaching hours per year. In addition, one more activity per year must be recorded.

Education

In Germany

construction

As an interdisciplinary science, there are a large number of subjects that include European science in both research and studies. The focus can be on general, European aspects or examine specific issues within Europe.

Despite the great diversity and many differences between the various universities, European studies are basically an interdisciplinary course that includes the sub-areas of European history, European law, economics, political science, sociology, European culture, European literature and European languages.

The curriculum is a. made up of modules from the following areas:

The structure of the European studies, in addition to various modules from the above-mentioned areas, usually includes a special focus on learning at least one foreign language as part of a special regional reference, as well as mandatory stays abroad (in the form of a study or internship abroad). Differences in the exact form of the regional reference as well as in the type and length of the stay abroad enable a high degree of individual adaptation with the choice of the study location.

Career prospects

The interdisciplinary nature of European studies offers graduates a wide range of opportunities on the job market. The professional opportunities can be in the cultural, social or economic area. Areas of application are conceivable in EU institutions, in public administration , tourism , advertising agencies , cultural organizations or educational providers, but also in internationally oriented companies and other institutions that deal with European issues or on which they are dependent within European cooperation. Depending on the professional focus, the structure of a stay abroad and the practical experience gained during the course, the professional entry can take place in very different areas.

A study of the whereabouts of the TU Chemnitz shows that 33% of their European studies graduates as employees in the private market economy, 29% in research, development and teaching, 14% in the service industry, 11% as employees in administration, 10% as managers in administration / private sector and 3% work in other fields of employment. According to the study of the whereabouts of the Center for European Integration Research (ZEI) at the University of Bonn, 12 percent of the graduates of the "Master of European Studies - Governance and Regulation" found successful work in the institutions of the European Union; 15 percent in national ministries, often foreign ministries, and parliaments; 24 percent in service industries and consulting firms; 22 percent in companies and corporations; Furthermore, ZEI graduates find jobs in the fields of media, science and international organizations.
