Jean Monnet program

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Jean Monnet Program , also known as the Jean Monnet Project , is a European Union initiative to promote teaching, research and reflection on European integration at universities. It is named after Jean Monnet (1888–1979), who for many is the chief architect of European unification .

overview

The program includes the network of Jean Monnet Centers of Excellence, university-level institutions recognized by the European Commission for high quality research and teaching related to European integration. The Commission also finances Jean Monnet Chairs and the Jean Monnet Teaching Modules.

The program was first launched in 1989 and between 1990 and 2011 will establish 162 Jean Monnet centers of excellence, 875 chairs and 1101 teaching modules in 72 countries and five continents worldwide. The projects, in which 1,500 university professors take part, reach around 500,000 students annually. Jean Monnet projects are selected based on their scientific relevance after peer review by independent specialist colleagues. The projects are carried out in strict compliance with the principle of freedom of science and teaching.
