history

The Europa-Kolleg Hamburg was founded in 1953 as a foundation on the initiative of the then rector of the University of Hamburg Bruno Snell .

The Europa-Kolleg has accompanied the process of European integration from the beginning through academic teaching, interdisciplinary research and high-profile events.

Initially, the Europa-Kolleg offered particularly qualified domestic and foreign students from a wide range of subjects the opportunity to live and learn under one roof. In the 1960s, postgraduate training and doctorate opportunities developed. A focal point in the 1990s was the “Integration Research” graduate college funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), from which approx. 45 doctoral students have emerged. The Europa-Kolleg has been running the post-graduate course "Master of European Studies" since 1998. With the beginning of the academic year 2008/09, a reformed course “European and European Legal Studies” will be offered.

With the establishment of the Institute for Integration Research in 1978 as a scientific institution at the University of Hamburg, the organizational framework for the development of research competence was created. Since then, with the support of the European Union and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in particular, the institute has carried out research projects, scientific conferences and lectures, which have been reflected in numerous publications.
