The Johnston Hall building, the seat of the university administration

The University of Guelph (U of G) is a state-public research university in Guelph in the province of Ontario . It was founded in 1964 following the merger of the Ontario Agricultural College , the Macdonald Institute and the Ontario Veterinary College. The university offers 94 Bachelor, 48 Master and 6 certificate courses in various disciplines.

history

The university's history dates back to early 1900 when the Ontario government bought 200 acres of land and opened the Ontario School of Agriculture on May 1, 1874 . A few years later, in 1880, it was renamed Ontario Agricultural College (OAC) . The first building to be completed was the Moreton Lodge, on which Johnston Hall is now located. The building contained lecture halls, a library, and other facilities. In the years that followed, other buildings were built on campus, including the President's Residence , Raithby House and the Day Hall.

The Macdonald Institute was founded in 1903 and housed the students in several fields of study in economics, natural sciences, and arts and cultural studies. The institute was named after the facility's financier, Sir William Macdonald. The Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) , which was founded in Toronto in 1862 , was moved to the university campus in 1922 . As a result, additional buildings had to be erected, otherwise the capacities would not be sufficient. The buildings completed during this period are MacDonald Hall, Massey Hall, the Bullring, Mills Hall, and Food Science.

The War Memorial Hall (also known as Memorial Hall) is a hallmark of the university on campus, which was built in 1924. It includes an auditorium and a memorial to the fallen students of the First World War. Two bronze plaques in the Memorial Chapel commemorate the alumni who died during World War I and World War II . The university administration and administration are located in Johnston Hall, which was built in 1931. These three colleges merged to form the University of Guelph on May 8, 1964.
