The University of Calgary is the state university in Calgary , in the province of Alberta in Canada . It was founded in 1966 and has about 28,000 students. The university is one of the leading research universities in Canada and is a member of the U15 Group of Canadian Research Universities . The university has four campuses , one of which is overseas in Doha , Qatar . The university offers a total of 150 study programs with which one can obtain a Bachelor , Master or PhD degree.
history
The University of Calgary was officially founded in 1966, but its history dates back to 1905 when the Alberta Normal School was founded in Calgary. The Alberta Normal School was established to train teachers for elementary and secondary schools in the new province. Calgary residents called for another state higher education institution to be established, and the provincial government approved the establishment of another one. A short time later, Calgary College was founded, which a few years later became the University of Calgary . In the early 20th century the departments of theology, law and medical sciences were added, and in 1971 the department of architecture. At the end of 1960, the university experienced a massive building boom. The Calgary Hall and the engineering department building have been expanded. In 1966 4,000 students studied at the university, the number of university members grew to 355 employees.

Campus facilities
Main campus
The main university campus is located approximately two kilometers outside of the city, north of downtown Calgary and south of the urban areas of Varsity and Dalhousie. The site covers an area of 2.13 km², making it larger than downtown Calgary. The campus is adjacent to the Crowchild Trail, 16 Avenue Northwest, 32 Avenue Northwest, and the Shaganappi Trail. 24 Avenue serves as the main access route to the campus.
The architecture is characterized by a combination of neo-Gothic and brutalism and modern buildings that are located on campus. Most of the buildings were constructed between 1905 and 1980.
A larger park was created in the inner area of the campus.
Downtown campus
The new Downtown Campus opened on September 13, 2010, at 8th Avenue and 8th Street south-west. The first construction phase has been completed and includes several facilities on campus, as well as a book store, a learning center and other facilities. After completion of the entire campus facility, the lecture halls of the Continuing Education and Energy & Environment departments as well as the individual areas of the Haskayne School of Business and the new School of Public Policy will be located there.
West campus
In 1995 the University of Alberta received a larger vacant lot with an area of around 800,000 m² and is located east of Shaganappi Trail between 16th Avenue ( Transcanada Highway ) and 32 Avenue Noth West. The West Campus is located on a hilly area near the Bow River . In addition to university buildings and facilities, the Alberta Children's Hospital and Child Development Center are located on campus. After the university's budget increased, the university management began with further expansion plans on the site.
Five years ago, the western part of the campus in particular was leased to the Alberta Children's Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House. Half of the campus is currently built on. The main university campus and downtown Calgary can be seen from the west campus.
Qatar
In 2007, the University of Calgary opened a campus in Doha , Qatar . The University of Calgary in Qatar trains nurses (Bachelor / Master of Nursing).

Facilities
The university has several facilities on its campus facilities. The MacEwan Hall is a multipurpose meeting hall for up to 1,000 people. The hall is used for conferences, dinner evenings and political debates. The Rozsa Center is a theater and concert hall and is located in the western area of the campus. The Olympic Oval is an ice rink on campus that was opened for the 1988 Winter Olympics . Other facilities are:

The sports teams call themselves the Calgary Dinos . You play in the Canada West and Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference college sports leagues .
