history

The U15 Group of Canadian Research Universities has grown to its current size over several decades. In the mid-1980s there was a first core gathering consisting of McMaster University , Queen's University , University of Toronto , University of Waterloo and University of Western Ontario . The focus of the collaboration was on lobbying for research investments towards the newly elected government.
In 1989 the Group of Ten / Le Group de Dix was formed , consisting of the following universities: McMaster University , Queen's University , University of Toronto , University of Waterloo , University of Western Ontario , University of British Columbia , University of Alberta , McGill University , Université de Montréal and Université Laval . At this point in time, the universities mentioned were distributing research data and taking a large part of the federal research funding. The association's intention is to create a Canadian equivalent to the AAU .
In 2006 the group was expanded by three members ( Dalhousie University , University of Calgary , University of Ottawa ) and became the Group of Thirteen , also known as G13 .
In 2011, with the addition of the universities of Manitoba and University of Saskatchewan , the merger became a Pan-Canadian formation, which from then on was named U15 . According to the directorate founded in 2012, whose first managing director Suzanne Corbeil was elected, there is no intention to add other universities to the association or to change the composition of the group.
