Theo de Raadt (* 19th May 1968 in Pretoria , South Africa ) is a in the open-source known -Gemeinde programmers and kernel - hacking .

De Raadt lives in Calgary , Canada , where he studied computer science at the University of Calgary . De Raadt was one of the founders of the NetBSD project in 1993 together with Chris Demetriou , Alan Glass and Charles Hannum . In 1995 he separated from the NetBSD core team due to various differences and founded the OpenBSD project, which OpenBSD users now like to call the "most secure operating system in the world". He is also head of the OpenSSH project.

De Raadt rejects confidentiality agreements in the software development process. He also worked intensively and in some cases successfully to ensure that the driver software as an interface to physical devices should only be subject to free licenses for operating systems under a free license - which is not common with many Linux distributions. Since mostly companies from Taiwan followed his efforts to subject driver software to a free license more than representatives of Intel and Broadcom , among others , he advocated giving preference to WLAN devices from Taiwan.

At FOSDEM 2005 he received the FSF Award 2004 from Richard Stallman .
