Broadcom was a US provider of integrated circuits (ICs) for network applications, especially network cards.
The company's shares were traded on the NASDAQ and were included in the NASDAQ 100 and the S&P 500 .
history
Broadcom was founded in 1991 by Henry Samueli , professor at the University of California ( UCLA ) and student Henry Nicholas. Samueli is chairman and chief technical officer . Broadcom was converted into a public company in 1998, lastly employed 10,650 people and has no production facilities of its own ( fabless ). The product range includes, for example, circuits for Ethernet , WLAN , cable modems , DSL modems and cell phones .
In 2004, Broadcom acquired the company Widcomm and their known Bluetooth - protocol stack for Windows and Windows CE or Windows Mobile . In 2006 Broadcom bought competitor Sandburst.
The Raspberry Pi Foundation uses Broadcom single-chip systems, originally developed for cell phones, as processors for their single-board computers.
On May 28, 2015, Singapore-based competitor Avago Technologies announced it was taking over Broadcom for $ 37 billion. $ 17 billion in cash was paid for with 32% of Avago's stock. The group that will be created after the merger of the two companies will have a market capitalization of 77 billion US dollars . The two companies had 2014 revenues of $ 8.4 billion (Broadcom) and $ 4.9 billion (Avago), respectively. On January 30, 2016, Avago Technologies completed the acquisition and then renamed itself Broadcom Ltd. based in Singapore . In 2018, Broadcom moved its headquarters from Singapore to the USA. The shares of Broadcom Ltd. were the Broadcom Inc. transferred.
