Semiconductor industry

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The semiconductor industry is a specialized area of the electrical industry . The companies in this branch of industry are active in the production and sale of semiconductor- based components and assemblies, i.e. both manufacturers of these products, also known as semiconductor manufacturers , and suppliers for the semiconductor material or special production systems such as photolithography systems. Even if photovoltaics also uses and produces semiconductor components, these companies are generally not counted in the semiconductor industry, but in the photovoltaic industry .

Typical products of the semiconductor industry are both discrete semiconductor components such as diodes , transistors , thyristors or light emitting diodes , as well as more complex microelectronic products such as semiconductor memories and integrated circuits (ICs). Furthermore, microsystem components and groups such as sensors and actuators (converters) belong to the semiconductor industry.

The following table lists the five largest companies worldwide in 2019 and their market shares in the semiconductor industry.

rank Companies Market share
1 Intel Corporation 15.7%
2 Samsung Electronics 12.5%
3 SK Hynix 5.4%
4th Micron Technology 4.8%
5 Broadcom 3.7%
