history

The company was established in February 1983 as Hyundai Electronics Industries Co., Ltd. established. In the 1980s and 1990s, the company focused mainly on the production of DRAM components, and later also SDRAM elements. In 1999 the company merged with LG Semiconductor Co., Ltd.

In 2001 it was first completely separated from the Hyundai Group. Shortly after that was LCD sub-class of 650 million US dollars sold and the company name in Hynix Semiconductor Inc. changed. Also in 2001, the world's first 128 MB DDR SDRAM for graphics cards was presented.

In 2004 and 2005 it came to light that Hynix was involved in worldwide price fixing for DRAM elements between 1999 and 2002 , thus impeding competition and driving up prices for PCs . The company was then - like the other parties involved - sentenced to a fine of 160 million US dollars ( Samsung : 300 million US dollars; Infineon : 160 million US dollars).

On November 14, 2011, SK Telecom took over a 21.1 percent stake in Hynix for 3.43 trillion won (2.2 billion euros) and thus became the largest shareholder. Shortly thereafter, the company was renamed SK Hynix.

In September 2013, a fire in two SK Hynix production lines in China led to a massive loss of production capacities there. As a result, the prices for RAM rose considerably on the world market in the following months.
