Forbes Global 2000
Forbes Global 2000 is an annual listing of the 2,000 largest publicly traded companies in the world. It is published by the US business magazine Forbes .
overview
The Forbes Global 2000 list was first published by the US business magazine Forbes on July 3, 2003. It contains the 2,000 largest publicly traded companies in the world. The list replaced the Forbes 500 list published annually between 1997 and 2003 with the 500 largest companies in the USA. The list is far from complete, as non-American corporations are only included if they have trade relations with the United States. This is why a number of the actually largest listed companies are missing.
There is no globally recognized uniform standard of assessment for the size of a company. Possible variables are turnover , market capitalization or the number of employees. Forbes chose a combination of sales , net income , assets, and market value . The placements of the companies in the equally weighted categories are added together to form a rank.
The equal weighting of the four criteria of sales, net profit, assets and market value used by Forbes, without taking into account the industry of the individual companies, results in a distorted picture in favor of debt- intensive industries such as banks and insurance companies. In particular because the assets also include the assets financed with debt and therefore do not reflect the actual amount of own funds. For example, Bank of America only has around a third of the sales, a third of the profit and around 40 percent of the market value of ExxonMobil , but is still one rank above ExxonMobil according to the method used by Forbes.
From 2003 to 2012, US corporations ( Citigroup , ExxonMobil, General Electric , JPMorgan Chase ) were almost always in first place in the Forbes Global 2000 list . Only in 2008 was a non-American corporation listed in first place with the British HSBC . Since 2013, the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China has taken 1st place in the ranking every year . Allianz achieved the best ranking of a German company in 2008 with 14th place.
Forbes Global 2000 competes with the Fortune Global 500 and Financial Times Global 500 lists .
