Financial Times Global 500 is a quarterly list of the world's 500 largest companies by market capitalization . It is published by the British business newspaper Financial Times .

The Financial Times Global 500 list is published by the UK business newspaper Financial Times . It contains the 500 largest publicly traded companies in the world by market capitalization . Initially, the FT Global 500 was published once a year. From 1996 to 1999 the list was published in January with the data from the end of September and from 2000 in May with the data from the end of March. The frequency of publication was later changed to four times a year.

According to the Financial Times, only companies with a free float of at least 15 percent are included. This is why there are no corporations that are almost entirely owned by the state or controlled by family holdings . The share price is converted into a common currency for better comparability. All numbers in the respective list are in US dollars at the same day exchange rate. The classification of the nationality of a group is based on the place of establishment of the company and the place of the main listing on the stock exchange.

Since 1995 four corporations from the USA ( Apple , ExxonMobil , General Electric , Microsoft ), one corporation from Japan ( Nippon Telegraph and Telephone ) and one corporation from China ( PetroChina ) have been the largest companies in the world. Deutsche Telekom achieved the best ranking of a German company on March 31, 2000. With a market capitalization of 209.628 billion US dollars, the group was 10th worldwide and 1st in Europe.

There is no globally recognized uniform standard of assessment for the size of a company. Possible variables are turnover , market capitalization or the number of employees. Financial Times has chosen market capitalization. FT Global 500 competes with the Forbes Global 2000 and Fortune Global 500 lists .

Top 20 from 1995 and 2012

The first Financial Times Global 500 appeared on January 25, 1996 with data from September 30, 1995. In the 1995 list, there were eight Japanese companies in the top 20. Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) was the largest company in the world by market capitalization. On December 31, 2012, NTT was in 131st place and Toyota was in 28th place, the best-placed company in Japan. Only five companies from the top 20 in 1995 (General Electric, Royal Dutch Shell , AT&T , Microsoft, IBM ) were also among the 20 largest corporations in the world by market capitalization in 2012.

Seven companies from the top 20 from 1995 were no longer represented in the Financial Times Global 500 in 2012 due to mergers: Exxon (1999 merger with Mobil to form ExxonMobil), Dai-Ichi Kangyo Bank, Fuji Bank and Industrial Bank of Japan (2000 merger for Mizuho Financial Group ), Sumitomo Bank (2001 merger with Sakura Bank to Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation ), Sanwa Bank (2002 merger with Tokai Bank and Toyo Trust and Banking Co. to form UFJ Bank) and the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi ( 2006 merger with UFJ Bank to Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ ). One company changed its name: Philip Morris has been called the Altria Group since 2003 .

No group from Germany was able to place itself in the top 20. Among the 100 largest companies in the world by market capitalization, however, four German companies made it in 1995: 32nd Allianz , 62nd Siemens , 71st Daimler-Benz and 76th Deutsche Bank . In 2012, five German companies were among the top 100: 56th Volkswagen , 57th SAP , 63rd Siemens, 74th BASF and 81st Bayer .
