The self-propelled loader T 170 was produced from 1957 to 1962 at the VEB combine harvester plant in Weimar . It was developed in 1956 as a universal loader intended for agriculture with load hook and grapple operation, but was later also used in the construction industry. The charger was presented as a self-propelled charger at the agra in Markkleeberg in 1956 . Equipped with a manure bucket, the device should pick up manure from a push rod manure removal system and place it on the manure plate, or load farm wagons with manure equipped with a grab.
The undercarriage consists of a welded sheet metal profile construction. The steering takes place via two adjustable tie rods, which are connected to the steering via a plug in self-propelled mode. The T 170 has four unsprung individual wheels. The drive train runs via a vertical shaft to a reduction gear, further via a roller chain to the differential gear connected to the half-axles. The driving speed is only 3.5 km / h. The device could be moved at a maximum of 20 km / h with a tow bar.
The superstructure, which consists of a welded profile frame, rests 360 ° rotatable on the ball ring. All drive elements, lifting, rotating and retracting mechanisms, the driver's cab with the operating elements and the bearings for the boom are located on the superstructure platform. The fork-shaped boom consisting of two tubular spars has a length of 6.3 meters and is rotatably attached to the front part of the platform. The load capacity is 0.8 tons.
In the series production of the water-cooled was first cylinder - the diesel engine 1 NVD 14 SRW of VEB Elbewerk Roßlau fitted with a power of 10 HP; later the 13 HP air-cooled two-cylinder diesel engine GD 2 from VEB Robur-Werke Zittau was used, which was further built as 2 NVD 12.5 SRL from 1967 in the VEB engine factory in Cunewalde . The T 170 could be used with a 50 meter long rope to pull carts. It cost 20,000 marks and 3,811 units were built. It was replaced by the T 172 , which outwardly resembled the T 170, but had a higher lifting capacity, outreach and engine power.
