The state-owned company VEB Motorenwerk Cunewalde was the most important manufacturer of small diesel engines in the Comecon . It belonged to the vehicle construction industry association and was located in Cunewalde in the Bautzen district in Upper Lusatia .

In the period from 1950 to 1990, over 658,000 high- speed air and water-cooled diesel engines from 3 to 88 hp (2.2 to 65 kW) were built.

In 1990 VEB was renamed Dieselmotorenwerke Cunewalde GmbH and in 1992 MFT GmbH (Motoren und Fahrzeugtechnik GmbH) was founded. The company has been completely privatized since 1994. MFT has now specialized in particular in engine components such as camshafts, balance shafts and prismatic components and employs around 150 people (2020).
