The tractor series RS14 with the brand name Famulus , also jokingly called "plum jam " in some regions, was built as the successor to the RS04 series from 1956 to 1965 at VEB Schlepperwerk Nordhausen in the GDR . In the beginning these tractors were still sold under the name “Favorit”, but after legal disputes over this name the tractors were given the nickname “Famulus” in 1958.
chronology
The RS14 was available in various basic versions, with the horsepower number in the name :
- Famulus 30: RS14 / 30L air-cooled and RS14 / 30W water-cooled (22 kW)
- Famulus 36: RS14 / 36L air-cooled and RS14 / 36W water-cooled (26 kW)
- Famulus 46: RS14 / 46W only water-cooled (34 kW, also as all-wheel drive)
- Famulus 40: RS14 / 40W only water-cooled (29 kW, also as all-wheel drive)
- Famulus 60: RS14 / 60 (44 kW, all-wheel drive) with a longer wheelbase
From 1964 the tractor series was revised. The innovations included a roll bar to protect the driver and an air pressure system for carrying up to two air-braked trailers. In addition, the brake of the RS14 was no longer automatically activated when the steering was turned. From 1964 there were only these tractors, RT stands for wheel tractor :
- Famulus 36: RT315 air-cooled, 24 kW
- Famulus 40: RT325 water-cooled, 29 kW
- Famulus 60: RT330 water-cooled, 44 kW
The RS14 / 50 prototype was tested, but never built in series. It was equipped with a 29 kW four-cylinder engine of the type 4 NVD 12.5 - SRL.
technology
All tractors are designed in frameless block construction. The rear axle is a rigid axle, while the front axle is a swing axle. Five-speed gearboxes with reverse gear and group shifting were installed, so there are ten forward and two reverse gears. The tractors have a rear and front PTO. The power is transmitted between the gearbox and the engine via a single-plate dry clutch. The Famulus series 30, 36, 46 and 40 had air-cooled or water-cooled two-cylinder engines (22 to 34 kW), the Famulus 60 series already had water-cooled 3-cylinder diesel engines . The motors of the EM 2-15 , 2 KVD 14.5 SRL and 2 or 3 KVD 14.5 SRW series were installed . An inner shoe brake is used as the brake. All tractors have a three-point linkage.
A whole range of special accessories could be ordered for Famulus tractors, including a tire inflation pump, a weather roof, various cutter bars, modified towing devices, hitch hooks , wheel weights, cage wheels, pulley drive and an extended front PTO.
Due to the need for a more powerful wheeled tractor, the engine speed was increased from 1650 / min on the RS14 / 36W to 2000 / min on the RS14 / 46. The motor of the RS14 / 46 was thermally overloaded, which significantly reduced the service life. For this reason, the engine speed of the RS14 / 46W during scheduled maintenance and that of the successor, the RS14 / 40W, was reduced to 1800 rpm, which significantly increased the durability of the engine. The years of construction of the RS14 / 40W model are therefore later than those of the RS14 / 46W. Although the air-cooled engines often require a general overhaul after 1000 hours, more air-cooled RS14s have survived than water-cooled ones. The water-cooled engines are much more durable, although the cylinder head gasket defects are relatively common.

RS 14 in the present
Due to the relatively high gear ratio of up to 30 km / h top speed for the time, these tractors are still popular today and are often still in private use, which is certainly also due to the simple and robust technology. This means that a relatively large number of spare parts are still available compared to other brands.
