The state-owned company VEB Schlepperwerk Nordhausen was a tractor manufacturer in the GDR . After the end of tractor production, the company traded as VEB Motorenwerk Nordhausen and was East Germany's largest engine manufacturer.

location

The factory site, of which some buildings still exist, was located between the western outskirts of Nordhausen and the Salza district . The Salza River touches the western border of the plant.

history

The company was founded in 1948 and in the same year became part of the IFA Association of Volkseigener Fahrzeugbau . It was created from the remains of the dismantled and destroyed Maschinenbau & Bahnbedarfs AG . The second tractor manufacturer in Nordhausen was Nordhäuser Maschinenbau AG ( Normag ). Both were traditional companies in the field of internal combustion engine and tractor construction. Production of the first newly developed tractor began in 1949.

In 1956 the company was assigned to the industrial administration of agricultural machinery together with the other tractor factories in the GDR . In the early 1960s, these tractor factories were profiled to include final production ( Schönebeck tractor factory), engine production (Nordhausen tractor factory) and gearbox production ( Brandenburger tractor works ). However, this profiling was not effective for tractor construction, but for vehicle construction , to which the tractor factories were reassigned from 1964. In the years that followed, tractor construction in the GDR was limited to the Schönebeck tractor factory. From that point on , the company in Nordhausen traded as VEB Motorenwerk Nordhausen , which had around 4,300 employees at the end of the 1980s and produced around 1,000,000 diesel engines for trucks, tractors and self-propelled machines between 1965 and 1990. It was liquidated after 1990.

The film trouble churning of Karlheinz Mund 1989 was filmed at the factory.
