The Progress E 516 combine harvester is a self-propelled harvesting machine for threshing all common crops, such as grain, oilseeds, pulses and special crops. In the agricultural machinery industry in the GDR, it belonged to the performance class of machines up to 6 t / ha.

The E 516 is the logical further development of the combine harvester E 512 from the combine progress agricultural machinery . Building on the experience with its predecessor, the type was completely redesigned at the end of the 1960s. Compared to the E 512, the threshing performance of crops should be doubled, i.e. instead of a throughput of 5 kg / s, 10 kg / s was aimed for; In the end, 14 kg / s were achieved. It was not enough to simply increase the dimensions, but extensive improvements to the threshing drum, cutting unit and separating tools were made in close cooperation with the TU Dresden . In addition, the ease of use has been increased as many functions are now hydraulically operated and driven. As drive, the V8 diesel engine was 8 VD 14.5 / 12.5 SVW from the diesel engine plant Schoenebeck with 168 kW (228 hp) at 2200 min -1 installed. In use, up to 2.56 ha / h could be threshed with wheat. Grain headers were available in variants with widths of 22  ft (6.70 m) and 25 ft (7.60 m), as well as various additional equipment such as corn cutter, sunflower picker and swath pick-up.

A progress E 516 cost a total of 112,140.23 marks in 1980 according to the retail product range catalog .

Combine harvester progress E 516B

The first functional models of the machine were available as early as 1974. Series production began in 1977 at the Singwitz plant and, from 1984, also in the Bischofswerda plant of the Bischofswerda / Singwitz combine harvester plant . The second oil crisis , which also reached the GDR in 1982 , led to the further development of the E 516B, which received a speed-restricted engine from the same series. With 200 min −1 less, it did the same work with a real 10% reduction in consumption in the full load range (now only about 27 l / h) - but the ratios for the threshing mechanism and the fan reversing gear had to be adjusted. The E 516 was produced from 1977, at the time it was one of the most powerful combine harvesters on the world market, until 1983 in the Singwitz combine harvester, then as the E 516B until 1988 in the Bischofswerda combine harvester. Its successor was the more powerful E 517 (16 kg / s throughput).
