Peter Feiffer around 1960

Peter Feiffer (born June 28, 1934 in Liegnitz , then the province of Lower Silesia ; † February 15, 2017 in Nordhausen ) was a German researcher and inventor in agricultural science . He is considered the founder of technological combine harvester optimization in Germany and was a full member of the Academy of Non-Profit Science in Erfurt .

Life

He spent his childhood on a manor in Bucz near Posen . After the end of World War II, he and his family fled to East Germany. After graduating from high school, he studied agricultural science at the HU Berlin . He did his doctorate here in 1965 on the combine harvester variety test. In 1986 he completed his habilitation with Artur Spengler at the Academy of Agricultural Sciences of the GDR (AdL) with a dissertation B on process optimization in the grain harvest. In the GDR in the 1960s, he founded the Center for Mechanization and Technology in Nordhausen. By converting this research center into the company feiffer consult , he was able to continue his scientific activities even after German reunification .

Loss indicator in the combine harvester

In 1961, in collaboration with Manfred von Ardenne , he invented electronic loss control for combine harvesters . For the combine harvester driver to make effective use of the performance capacities of these machines, permanent measurement and monitoring of the grain losses in the ongoing harvesting process is of particular importance. With these devices it was possible for the first time to record grain losses fully automatically and to display them in the driver's cab while the threshing process was in progress. The use of the device initially led to significant increases in crop yields in the agricultural operations of the GDR . In the period that followed, this technology established itself beyond the borders of the GDR. Today all loss measuring devices in modern harvesting machines work according to this functional principle.

In addition, he developed new concepts for general process optimization of combine harvesting: parallel grain transfer, the use of swap drivers or combine harvesting in complexes. The loss test tray for calibrating loss measuring devices, which is widely used in modern agriculture , can also be traced back to Peter Feiffer.

Acknowledging his special achievements, he was also referred to by experts as the "combine harvester".
