I was a happy person is a documentary by DEFA -Studio für Dokumentarfilme GmbH by Eduard Schreiber from 1990 .

action

The 70-year-old business journalist Tilbert Eckertz never doubted his life or the social and political system of the GDR in which he lived and worked. From 1947 to 1953 he was employed in a managerial position at the ADN news agency until he was arrested and taken to the pretrial detention center of the Ministry of State Security . He was sentenced to five years in prison for alleged espionage for the class enemy , which he served in the Luckau-Duben correctional facility .

But he even interprets the prison sentence as an accident, because his unshakable belief in socialism is based on his experiences during the time of National Socialism . He did not consider emigrating to the Federal Republic after his release from prison. On the contrary, he started working again at ADN and it was a satisfaction to him that he was again entrusted with managerial tasks. The imprisonment of his daughter for attempting to escape via Bulgaria did not shake his mind either. Only the type of reproachful letters to her in prison, some of which he also reads, gives him something to think about today.

For Tilbert Eckertz, he, his wife, who has since died, and his two daughters were a completely normal family. What is hidden behind this idyll has piled up to a mountain in recent years, which is now to be removed by the events of 1989. He looks back on his life and begins a painful path of self-knowledge. The film illustrates the severe emotional stress associated with it. But his daughters also deal with the past differently.

production

I was a happy person was shot as black and white film and partly on ORWO color. It had its world premiere on November 24, 1990 during the International Leipzig Film Week for Documentary and Animated Film .
