Eduard Schreiber (born May 21, 1939 in Obernitz ) is a German film director and author.

Life

Eduard Schreiber was born in Obernitz ( Bohemia ) in 1939 and went to school there for another year until he and his family were resettled near Ilsenburg in the Harz Mountains in 1946 . After graduating from high school, his entire Abitur class was not allowed to study, so he committed to service in the NVA . He then applied to the Karl Marx University in Leipzig to study literature and was enrolled at the Institute for Literary Journalism . At the same time, he attended prose and literary criticism seminars and took a year of German studies .

Eduard Schreiber has regularly participated in the documentary film week in Leipzig every year since 1960 and moved in a circle around the film art theater Casino . Here he maintained very intensive contact with other filmmakers, which shaped him thoroughly. At that time, Schreiber was leading some evening discussions at the Hotel Astoria and wrote many film reviews until he joined the DEFA studio for documentary films in 1970 , where he was a member until 1990. A doctorate on Prague literature with Eduard Goldstücker was not permitted by Karl Marx University because the Prague Spring had already begun, which is why he did his doctorate on Egon Erwin Kisch .

After 1990 he read his Stasi files and found that he was under surveillance by the Ministry for State Security in the early 1960s . In the eight years alone in the DEFA studio for documentary films, 14 employees have written reports about him. In 1988 Eduard Schreiber left the SED .

In addition to his work as a director of over 50 documentaries, Eduard Schreiber, who also calls himself Radonitzer, became known for his work on film theory and film history, as a post-poet , translator of poetry and prose and other writings from the Czech language into German and as an editor . In the Czech Republic he is a member of the artists' association “Q”.

Eduard Schreiber lives in Wilhelmshorst .
