Dependent is a documentary from DEFA Studios for Documentaries by Eduard Schreiber from 1984 .

action

The film begins with a view of a narrow alley between two assembly halls of the Neptun shipyard in the snowy dawn of a winter day. A voice from the off explains that they have been helping employees here since 1980 who have become outsiders due to alcohol addiction . Here you have the opportunity to take medication under supervision to dissuade you from alcohol. This also includes a special care center headed by Eberhard Kunstmann, which was set up in 1982. Here, together with the company policlinic , the city's psychiatric center and the brigades, alcoholic colleagues are informed about their condition and given social support.

A look into a consultation room shows Eberhard Kunstmann how he introduces himself as an employee of the Office for Management and Education. His listeners are the colleagues of an alcohol addict with whom the problem is to be discussed. It comes up that the person in question has been working in the shipyard since 1967 and did his job well in terms of quality until the alcohol came along. With drinking came the inconvenience around him and the family broke down. Kunstmann emphasizes that the colleague must not drink alcohol under any circumstances, not even a drop. A colleague throws in that he no longer wants to work with the alcoholic man, because six to eight workers are dependent on him, who cannot do their job through him and thus earn less money. But Kunstmann emphasizes again that the collective also has a responsibility to dissuade their colleagues from alcohol. In a next shot, the alcohol addict tells how he started at the shipyard, qualified himself, got married and how the first problems arose. That led to drinking two large bottles of schnapps each evening and attempted suicide with gas even though his divorced wife and child were in the apartment. In any case, he is of the opinion that he is now on the right track with the tablets.

In addition to Kunstmann, there is another addict sitting in the consultation room who only answers the doctor's questions with excuses. During the conversation, it is made clear to him that he has already been recorded as a citizen at risk of criminal activity and that he has been ordered to go to a specialist consultation to undergo therapy . Should he reject this, he must reckon with corresponding consequences. B. may result in administrative penal proceedings. Since he is not drunk at the moment, he is advised to reconsider and get into therapy. Several weeks later, this addict reports back to Mr. Kunstmann for therapy. He couldn't do it alone, because all relatives and friends drink, even if not that much. The same goes for his work colleagues.

After Kunstmann had another conversation with two other addicts in his office, he tried to explain the disease and its connections. He shows that his work is important, because normally you can't get out of the problem on your own. This is only possible when the person concerned works together with the doctor, work colleagues, family and personal care. This is very important because the alcoholic automatically becomes an outsider due to his illness. When someone is ready to undergo treatment, this is already the first success for Kunstmann.

For the alcoholic first featured in this film, the therapy was a success. In the end, he got his license to work as a crane operator again, has become more self-confident, has regained the trust of his colleagues and now wants to make up for the lost time and money.

Between the individual sections of this film, shots from the operations of the shipyard, including the launch of a ship, are shown again and again .

production

It depends on a black and white film that Eduard Schreiber shot with the Artistic Working Group (KAG) effekt under the working title Werftarbeiter Kunstmann in the Neptun shipyard in Rostock . The dramaturgy was in the hands of Richard Ritterbusch .

criticism

Klaus-Peter Wolf states in the Neue Zeit that the

“A film by Eduard Schreiber, (who) presents an experiment that is unique in this form in the GDR. In between, however, symbolic images of work at the shipyard and music with which one obviously tried to add a harmonious note to the chosen topic appear superfluous. "
