Backsliding is a documentary film of the DEFA Studios for Documentary by Eduard Schreiber in the year 1988 .

action

This film introduces four people who became addicted to alcohol. But he begins with the admission of a completely drunk man who is delivered to the emergency room of a hospital. Here he can spend the next few hours in a sobering cell. The next shot shows a beverage shop whose shelves are filled with high-proof beverages and where you have to stand in line to be served.

A young man is sitting in an alcohol and drug advice center and is having a conversation with the person in charge . Here he tells how he got into alcohol and how his life has been so far. During the conversation, the camera shows footage from a company where spirits are bottled. The idea that he could be alcoholic is somehow alien to him. Another young man also talks in detail about his personal development and his path to alcohol. He reports how he managed to drink without arousing suspicion. Here, too, images are faded in, this time from a department store , in the checkout areas of which there are several box pallets filled with liquor bottles.

The next interview takes place in the apartment of a 37 year old graduate engineer. He is married and has two children. When asked how he got into alcohol, he cannot give a simple answer. It began that this served to relax in the evening at the beginning and later became a driving factor for business and private problems that could not be solved. He describes himself as ambitious, honest, tidy and otherwise has completely normal dispositions, as he says. During the filming he had already given up alcohol.

Another young man is drunk and brought to the rescue center by the German People's Police . However, he does not behave as calmly as the older gentleman before and vigorously defends himself against the delivery, because according to his statement he only drank three glasses of champagne. He too has to spend the night in the sobering room until the next morning.

The fourth alcohol addict, a former quality controller, works in the washing up in a large kitchen . She had to give up her job because of her addiction. Like the other three, she talks openly about her professional and personal development and the reasons that led her to alcohol. But she realizes that alcohol cannot eliminate worries and problems. And again there is a fade-in of vodka bottles wrapped in foil being transported on a conveyor belt.

At the end of the shooting, three of the people featured were already addicted to alcohol. Only the graduate engineer was abstinent . The film shows that the problem exists in all age groups and classes as well as in both sexes. Everyone is potentially at risk and loved ones should not overlook the signs of a drinker. Above all, one must understand addiction as a disease.
