The T 188 was a further development of the T 185 , from which the superstructure was taken over. Important innovations were the joystick control and the panorama cabin for improved working comfort. A sliding plate or optionally a 4-point support as well as the fully hydraulic implement control and the hydraulic travel drive were important and necessary improvements compared to its predecessor. The four-cylinder in-line diesel engine 4 VD 14.5 / 12-1 SRW was a standard engine from the Nordhausen engine factory, the more powerful versions of which were also used in the ZT 320 and W50 . The axles were taken over from the L60 for reasons of material economy and to make subsequent maintenance more efficient . The high-performance hydraulic pumps with working pressures of up to 320 bar were completely redeveloped.
The first sample was tested in 1983. A total of 378 units were built in 1988 and 1989. The load capacity is specified as 3.6 t, depending on the boom adjustment. A total of 29 attachments were available, most of which could be used by the T 174 . The excavator has two forward gears (5 and 20 km / h), one reverse gear (5 km / h) and a differential lock to ensure good propulsion even in the field. The gradeability is given as 45 °.
