Description and technology

The external shape and the control stand were taken from the T 170. Twin tires were attached to the rear axle , the front wheels were given hydraulic pendulum compensation to achieve more stability. In contrast to the T 170, the boom can now be adjusted hydraulically using a luffing cylinder. This enables the winch and boom to be operated at the same time. The lifting capacity, the radius and the engine power have been increased compared to the predecessor.

Various grippers were available for the vehicle, including a motor gripper that was driven by a 3.5 kW (other sources: 1.75 kW) three-phase generator and had a capacity of 0.3 m³. It was also possible to operate various tools with this three-phase generator and to use a cable winch with a pulling force of up to 1,000  kP . The bracket, made in sheet metal construction, can be extended by installing spacers.

The maximum transfer speed is 10 km / h, which enables a reversible two-speed transmission. The maximum speed in towing mode is 20 km / h. What was new was the adaptation of the vehicle to the requirements of the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO) by installing a lighting system including searchlights. The price of the T 172 was 25,000 marks .

8,817 units were produced. The successor is the T 174 .

T 172 with shell gripper as a toy version from before 1964, manufactured by VEB (K) Metallspielwaren Weimar

The manufacturer of tin toys VEB (K) Metallspielwaren Weimar , which was also based in Weimar at the time, produced the self-loading excavator T 172 with a shell grab as a mechanical, scale toy controlled by fine metal chains until the end of July 1964. The model was operated with the original item number 158 / 180 with an elevator motor with winding key. The vehicle housing is made of hard plastic, the price (then still VEP ) was DM 16.75. The price in DM indicates that the toy was built and sold before August 1, 1964, as the DM (as GDR currency) was officially in use until July 31, 1964. The number of models produced is not known.
