The IFA 1318 was a prototype of the VEB Automobilwerke Ludwigsfelde , which should replace the trucks W50 and L60 .

history

On the basis of a preliminary agreement (Memorandum of Understanding), the Ludwigsfelde automobile works announced a strategic partnership with Daimler-Benz in the spring of 1990 . As a result, a new vehicle type called IFA 1318 was to be developed. The driver's cab was to be supplied by Daimler ( Mercedes-Benz LK ), the chassis, engine and transmission were further developed components from the L60 from local suppliers such as VEB Motorenwerk Nordhausen or VEB Getriebewerk Brandenburg .

The prototype was presented at the IFA factory on May 3, 1990, in the presence of the then Mercedes boss Werner Niefer .

A short time later, on July 18, 1990, the general director of the IFA-Kombinat announced at a meeting in Ludwigsfelde that Daimler no longer felt bound by the agreements due to the changed political situation.

The market for "GDR products" had meanwhile collapsed dramatically. Investigations at Mercedes had also shown that there was no hope in the long term of being able to manufacture the truck at cost through rationalization. Instead, Mercedes announced the proven T 2 and LK for Ludwigsfelde for production. With the LK, Mercedes had had a comparable, more versatile and very successful model in its range since 1983.
