Like its predecessor, the Do 54, the Do 56 is based on the IFA H6 truck model . In contrast to the Do 54, the superstructures are no longer made of wood, but of steel . Visually, the Do 56 differs from the Do 54 in that the front panels extend into the sides. In addition to 105 buses that were delivered to BVG-Ost, a smaller number also went to various transport companies in the GDR. A copy was in 1959 together with two tractor biplanes type dosa as a gift to the Soviet Union delivered, where they were used after their arrival in the Moscow city traffic. In 1963, the back entrances, which were previously open, were closed by a folding door on all cars.

By 1974 the remaining 104 wagons were decommissioned, some of which were then acquired by private individuals and continued to be used as gazebos . Two of the vehicles are now in the inventory of the heritage preservation association Nahverkehr Berlin (DVNB), of which the 088 bus is available as a roadworthy copy for special trips. Car 010 was owned by the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe until 1997 and was registered as a technical monument in the Treptow district monument list in 1978. It has been temporarily suspended since 2005.
