The IFA H6 ( H orch, 6 tons payload) was a medium-heavy truck built in the GDR , which supplemented the truck model range in addition to the IFA H3A developed in parallel .

history

The development of the truck began in the Second World War at Vogtländische Maschinenfabrik AG (Vomag). Since the Vomag was completely dismantled and smashed by the Soviet occupying forces shortly after the Second World War , development at Auto Union and Horch continued.

The H6 was presented at the Leipzig spring fair in 1951. It was produced from 1952 to 1959 in the VEB motor vehicle factory “Ernst Grube” Werdau , which was part of the vehicle construction industry association (IFA) . Until 1945 this was the Schumann works in Werdau ( Saxony ). At times, up to 100 vehicles were built a month.

At that time, the H6 was the GDR's truck with the highest payload and was characterized by its high level of reliability. After production was discontinued, a tractor unit from Gräf & Stift was probably imported to a small extent as a replacement for this heavy truck . The cessation of production followed COMECON plans, according to which heavy trucks were to be produced and delivered by other socialist countries in the future. Among other things, the Tatra and later KamAZ .

The H6 was just as much a part of the streets and cityscape of the GDR from the 1950s to 1970s as the H6B bus variant .

The successor was the IFA N7 . After two vehicles, the series production had to be stopped because the GDR (according to the COMECON resolution ) was not allowed to build heavy trucks. Another successor was to be the AZ57 forward control truck.

The H6 has two axles and is rear-wheel driven via a cardan shaft. The truck is a so-called long - nosed truck (truck with a "snout"). The buses and some custom-made vehicles are designed as front control vehicles.

  • Top speed on the road: 54 km / h, with H6B rear axle approx. 80 km / h
  • Models / superstructure: moving van, juggernauts, Tipper , suitcases , flatbed with tarpaulin, tractor (shorter chassis), crane and truck crane and others.

Most models have been delivered to the water-cooled 6-cylinder - swirl chamber engine of the type EM 6-20 from Werdau with a displacement of 9036 cc and 120 hp. The further development with 9840 cm³ displacement and 150 hp was available relatively early, but the gearboxes could not withstand the increase in performance, so the engines had to be throttled. Ever since reinforced gearboxes became available, the 150 hp engine was in series production. Almost all vehicles received this engine as part of the repairs. In the Schönebeck diesel engine plant, the 6VD14.5 / 12-1SRW unit with 190 hp was developed based on the H6 engine and was intended for construction and agricultural machinery. Since the installation dimensions were very similar to the original, many vehicles were retrofitted with the 190 hp engine. Today there is no known surviving vehicle with a 120 hp engine.

The H6 and G5 trucks , which were built around the same time in Werdau, have in part the same assemblies. In contrast to the G5, the H6 was intended for civilian use.

In addition to the H6B omnibus, the H6 was available in various variants and special designs. Among other things, VEB Spezialfahrzeugwerk Berlin produced a series of 50 excavator suction trucks in 1957 , which made it possible for the first time to mechanically clean manhole shafts in the GDR.

Further development

During the development of the Panther auto slewing crane , parts of the H6 were used. Based on the H6, the IFA N7 was designed with a low-frame chassis, it did not get beyond the prototype status.

The successor to the H6, the AZ57 , was fully developed in 1959 and ready for series production. In contrast to the H6 truck, the AZ57 was a front-wheel drive vehicle. The series production planned from 1960 onwards could not be started, however, because the production of commercial vehicles over 5 t payload and buses was assigned to other socialist states as part of the division of labor within the Comecon .
