Singwitz , in Sorbian , is a village in the south of the Saxon district of Bautzen . It is part of the official Sorbian settlement area in Upper Lusatia and has belonged to the municipality of Obergurig since 1950 . With over 600 inhabitants, Singwitz is the most populous district of the municipality.
geography
Singwitz is located six kilometers south of Bautzen in the foreland of the Lusatian mountains between 219 m and 240 m above sea level. NN. The area is hilly. The place stretches from the Spree in the southern part up the valley slope.
The place was originally a farming hamlet above the river, which was significantly expanded by numerous industrial buildings, especially in the first half of the 20th century. To the south of Singwitz, the mountains rise to a height of 455 m.
history
The place is first mentioned in 1221 as the manor of Cunimanus de Synkewicz . The current form of the name appears for the first time in 1590.
From the 13th to the 19th century, Singwitz did not officially belong to Upper Lusatia, but was owned by the Meißen diocese along with some surrounding towns and administered from Stolpen .
The place formed an independent rural community before it formed the new community of Obergurig on July 1, 1950 with Großdöbschütz and Mönchswalde .

The last population data for the independent community Singwitz indicate 761 inhabitants for 1946. In 1890 the place had only 269 inhabitants. The population has risen sharply between 1900 and 1940, mainly due to the industrial settlements and local expansion, and has fallen slightly since 1990.
For his statistics on the Sorbian population in Upper Lusatia, Arnošt Muka determined a population of 221 inhabitants in the 1880s; 194 of them were Sorbs (88%) and 27 Germans. As everywhere in the Protestant part of the settlement area, the proportion of Sorbian speakers has fallen sharply since then.

The last information on religious affiliation comes from 1925. At that time, 516 out of 562 inhabitants were Evangelical-Lutheran (92%). The place has belonged to the Evangelical Lutheran since the 17th century. Großpostwitz parish , partly also part of the Bautzen parish in the meantime. The Catholic part of the population has been parish to Bautzen since at least 1525.
Economy and Infrastructure
Singwitz was and is an important industrial location in the area. Among other things, the combine progress agricultural machinery manufactured combine harvesters here in the combine harvester plant in Bischofswerda / Singwitz . This branch of industry is continued by the companies MDW and HEMAS. Another company was the VEB Schreibgerätewerk, which produced the distinctive pens and was taken over by Edding after the reunification .

The place is a little off the state road 114 (Bautzen-Großpostwitz) on the side roads towards Gnaschwitz and Schwarznaußlitz .
Singwitz also has a stop on the Bautzen – Bad Schandau railway line . However, passenger traffic has been suspended here since 2004.
Culture and tourism
In the valley of the Spree not far from the village is the KesselhausLager Singwitz , which has served as a concert hall, cinema and discotheque since the 1990s. In recent years, musicians and bands known both in Germany and internationally have performed here - mainly from the blues / blues rock scene.
Singwitz is located on the Lausitzer Schlange long-distance hiking trail .
