Bermuda is located in the Atlantic Ocean , east of the US state of North Carolina . Since the archipelago is a tax haven (with low tax rates), credit institutions and insurance companies have settled there. Bermuda is considered to be the third largest center for reinsurance (e.g. Everest Re and Partner Re ) in competition with London and New York . As a British overseas territory, the archipelago is not part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland , but is under its sovereignty . Bermuda is also not part of the European Union .

At the time of the survey or in the 2007 financial year, all companies listed still had their legal seat in the capital of Bermuda, Hamilton . However, since 2008 numerous companies have relocated their headquarters from Bermuda to other countries. With Accenture , ACE Limited , Cooper Industries , Covidien , Foster Wheeler , Ingersoll-Rand , Tyco Electronics , Tyco International and Weatherford International , nine of the once twelve top-selling listed companies in Bermuda left the country within a few months.
