The McMahon Stadium is a Canadian football stadium on the campus of the University of Calgary in the Canadian city of Calgary , province of Alberta . It serves as the venue for the home games of the college team University of Calgary Dinos and the CFL team Calgary Stampeders . The sports facility has a capacity of 37,717 spectators.
history
The stadium was built in 1960 within 100 days for 1.05 million CAD to replace the Mewata Park Stadium . It was named after Frank McMahon and his brother George McMahon , who donated CAD 300,000 to the university. In 1985, after a land swap with the City of Calgary, the university received ownership of the stadium.
Events
The Gray Cup was held at McMahon Stadium in 1975, 1993, 2000 and 2009. The stadium has also been used for concerts on various occasions, such as the Festival Express tours in 1970 or the Lilith Fair tours in 1997 and 1998. On August 13, 2009, ZZ Top and Aerosmith performed together at the McMahon Stadium.
During the 1988 Winter Olympics , McMahon Stadium was used for the opening and closing ceremonies.
On February 20, 2011, the NHL game between the Montréal Canadiens and the Calgary Flames took place on the occasion of the NHL Heritage Classic 2011 at McMahon Stadium.
