The Commonwealth Stadium is a stadium with athletics track in the Canadian city of Edmonton , province of Alberta . It is mainly used by the Edmonton Eskimos from the Canadian Football League . For their games and events, the facility has been sponsored by The Brick Field at Commonwealth Stadium for five years since summer 2016 .

history

The 56,302-seat arena was built for the 1978 Commonwealth Games . The attendance record is even 62,531 at the Gray Cup 2002 . After the Montreal Olympic Stadium, the stadium is the competition venue with the second largest capacity in the country and also one of the main stadiums , until 2009, with a grass field, which means that it is often the venue for international football games and tournaments and until the opening of the BMO Field in Toronto was the main venue for the Canadian national soccer team in 2007 . In rugby union , the Churchill Cup and some games of the 2006 Women's Rugby Union World Cup were also played.

On November 22, 2003, the NHL Heritage Classic 2003 , an NHL outdoor ice hockey game between the Edmonton Oilers and the Montréal Canadiens , took place at Commonwealth Stadium . It was the first open-air game in the history of the National Hockey League and was watched by a record crowd of 57,167.

During the 2015 Women's World Cup , the Commonwealth Stadium hosted the opening game and the third place match.

On June 15, 2016, the Edmonton Eskimos announced that the stadium will bear the name of the furniture chain The Brick and officially be called The Brick Field at Commonwealth Stadium from this summer onwards for Eskimo games and events . The sponsorship agreement has a term of five years. The amount of annual payments from the Edmonton-based company was unknown.
