history

The stadium was built as part of Seville's bid for the 2004 Summer Olympics , in accordance with IOC specifications . The design comes from the architects Antonio Cruz Villalón and Antonio Ortiz García (Cruz y Ortiz Arquitectos). For a membrane -covered rope roof with a floor area of 25,000 sqm was Schlaich Bergermann Partner of Stuttgart responsible. The membrane is stretched in a zigzag over the 44 upper and 44 lower radial cables. The facility was opened on May 5, 1999 with the soccer friendly between Spain and Croatia (3: 1). The European football association UEFA has classified this stadium in category 4 , which is a prerequisite for being considered as a venue for a UEFA Europa League or UEFA Champions League final .

Since the city's two big football clubs , Betis and FC, play their home games in their long-term, club-owned venues, Estadio Benito Villamarín and Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán , the Olympic Stadium is rarely used for football games. In addition to various games of the national team , the final of the found UEFA Cup 2002/03 between FC Porto and Celtic FC (2 n v. 3) instead. On June 26, 1999, Valencia CF and Atlético Madrid (3-0) faced each other in the final of the Spanish Cup, the Copa del Rey , at La Cartuja , and two years later, on June 30, 2001, Real Saragossa and Celta played Vigo (3: 1) the cup final in the Olympic Stadium.

The stadium was used twice as a tennis arena for a Davis Cup final . The Spanish Davis Cup team stood in Seville in 2004 against the Davis Cup team of the United States in the final and won 3-2. In 2011, the Spaniards met Argentina in the final in the Olympic Stadium . Spain won the match 3-1 and secured their fifth Davis Cup title.

The Olympic Stadium is the start and finish point of the Seville Marathon . This took place in the stadium until 2013. For capacity reasons, it was then moved in front of the stadium.

The finals of the Spanish football cup Copa del Rey from 2020 to 2023 will be played in the stadium of Seville.

In addition to sporting events, concerts are also held in the Olympic Stadium.
