The Daegu Stadium ( kor. 대구 스타디움 ) is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the South Korean city of Daegu in the eastern province of Gyeongsangbuk-do .
history
The arena was built for the 2002 World Cup for around € 185 million and was then called the Daegu World Cup Stadium (Hangeul: 대구 월드컵 경기장 ). The stadium is also nicknamed Blue Arc ( German Blue Arch ). On March 5th, 2008 it got its current name. After Yokohama International, it was the venue with the second largest audience capacity. Today it seats 65,754 spectators; including 1,237 VIP seats and 192 disabled seats. There are 3,550 parking spaces available around the facility.
Construction began on July 29, 1997 and opened on June 28, 2001. The roof structure of the stadium consists of two steel arches with a span of 273 meters each; which spans the main and opposite stands. The total weight of the roof is 4,350 t and the roof skin consists of a glass fiber-reinforced PTFE - membrane . The roof covers almost 75 percent of the spectator seats.
As a dress rehearsal for the soccer world championship in 2001 the Confederations Cup u. a. also held in Daegu. One year after the World Cup, the sports facility hosted the 2003 Summer Universiade . Daegu was one of three venues for the second East Asian Cup in 2005. The Daegu Stadium is the starting and finishing point of the Daegu Marathon every year . From August 27 to September 4, 2011, the 13th World Athletics Championships took place in Daegu Stadium.
Until the end of 2018, the K League 1 club Daegu FC used the stadium as their home ground.
