The 18th World Athletics Championships should be held from August 6 to 15, 2021 in the US city of Eugene in the state of Oregon . The decision was made on April 16, 2015 at a meeting of the IAAF World Athletics Federation in Beijing . It will be the first ever World Athletics Championships in the United States. Due to postponements of events in 2020, especially the postponement of the Summer Olympics to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the World Athletics Association postponed the World Championships in Eugene to 2022 on March 30, 2020. On April 8, 2020, World Athletics known that the World Championships will take place from July 15 to 24, 2022. The early date adapts to the other major athletic events of the year. The Commonwealth Games in Birmingham will follow from July 27th to August 7th. Award
The city of Eugene was awarded the title fights without the usual application process. This happened before when the 2007 World Athletics Championships were awarded to Osaka .
The President of the European Athletic Association (EAA), Svein Arne Hansen , criticized that this was done for purely commercial reasons, as the sporting goods retailer Nike , among others , has its headquarters nearby. The Swedish city of Gothenburg was considered a serious candidate for the title fights, but was passed over with the decision.
Corruption suspected
In the course of the investigation into the award of the 2021 World Championships to the city of Eugene, the President of the US Athletics Federation USATF, Vin Lananna , suspended his office since February 2018, because at the time of the award by the world association in the year, in order to avoid a possible conflict of interests In 2015 he was head of the Eugenes Organizing Committee.
