history
With the construction of Portman Road at the end of the 19th century, Ipswich Town , then known as Ipswich AFC , had one of the first stadiums with goal nets and pitch markings. Due to the geographic location, the lawn was of high quality even then.
In 1936 the stadium was rebuilt and the field turned so that from now on the game was played in a north-south direction. Railings were erected around the field and a grandstand was built at the north and south end.
Over time, the stadium was expanded and in the game of the FA Cup 1974/75 on March 8, 1975 between Ipswich Town and Leeds United , the attendance record 38,010 was set. In the meantime, the capacity was 22,559, before new grandstands were built again in the 1990s and the number of seats rose to 30,311.
