Didier Levallet

Didier Levallet (born July 19, 1944 in Arcy-sur-Cure ) is a French jazz musician ( double bass , composition).

Levallet learned to play alto saxophone autodidactically as a teenager . He studied from 1963 to 1966 as a journalist at the École Supérieure de Journalisme and also took a few lessons on the bass at the Conservatory of the City of Lille; in Lille he first played with Alain Rellay and Michel Graillier . He has lived in Paris since 1967, where he made his debut in Chat qui Pêche in 1969 and performed with musicians such as Georges Arvanitas , Ted Curson , Siegfried Kessler , Hank Mobley , Mal Waldron , Kenny Clarke , Johnny Griffin and Slide Hampton .

He also headed the groups Perception (1970 to 1977, with Yochk'o Seffer , Siegfried Kessler and Mino Cinelu ) and Confluence (1975 to 1980, with Jean-Charles Capon and Christian Escoudé ). In the mid-1970s he founded the Association pour le développement de la musique improvisée as a lobby group . In the late 1970s and early 1980s he founded other bands, a quintet, a large formation, a trio with Dominique Pifarély and Gérard Marais and the drum-less Swing String System (initially with Didier Lockwood , Bernard Lubat and Christian Escoudé).

In 1987 Levallet was one of the founders of the Zhivaro group alongside Henri Texier , Sylvain Kassap , Claude Barthélémy , Gérard Marais and Jacques Mahieux . In 1992 he founded the Générations group (with Jean-Louis Chautemps , Michel Marre , Manuel Rocheman , Simon Goubert , Glenn Ferris and Vincent Courtois ). In addition, he led other groups and belonged (with Daunik Lazro ) to the Outlaws in jazz . During this time he also worked a. a. with Archie Shepp , Frank Lowe , Byard Lancaster , Charles Tyler , Chris McGregor , Mike Westbrook , Günter Sommer , John Lewis , Steve Lacy and Jeanne Lee .

From 1997 to 2000 Levallet directed the Orchester National de Jazz , in 2001 he became director of the Scène Nationale de Montbéliard .

Levallet gave jazz courses in numerous French cities. From 1981 to 1992 he directed the jazz class at the Angoulême Conservatory , then until 2000 that of the Montreuil Conservatory . In addition, he taught jazz history and analysis at the Lille Conservatory from 1996 to 2000.
