Celine Bonacina (born July 23, 1975 in Belfort ) is a French jazz musician (saxophone and composition ). She plays the soprano , alto and preferably baritone saxophone .

Life

Bonacina's musical interest was piqued at the age of eight. She took lessons in classical saxophone playing at various conservatories in her hometown and in Besançon , then in Paris .

Between 1996 and 1998 Bonacina played the baritone saxophone in various jazz big bands in Paris. She then moved to La Réunion for seven years to teach saxophone at the Conservatoire National de Région . During this time she took part in numerous festivals in the Indian Ocean region. Musical influences of this time, such as the inclusion of the living rhythms there, show up in her later compositions. Returning to Paris, her debut album Vue d'en Haut was released in 2005 .

Bonacina has worked with musicians such as the French pianist Laurent de Wilde , the Cuban pianist Omar Sosa , the vibraphonist Mike Mainieri , the saxophonist Andy Sheppard and the guitarists Yannick Robert and Nguyên Lê . She also temporarily supplemented the funk unit of the Swedish trombonist Nils Landgren . She also performed with Michael Wollny , Michel Benita , Didier Levallet , Tineke Postma , Julien Lourau , Bojan Z , Terri Lyne Carrington and Rhoda Scott .

Their album Way of Life , which is based almost exclusively on their own compositions, was recorded in a trio with the French Nicolas Garnier (electric bass) and the Madagascan Hary Ratsimbazafy (drums and percussion) as well as the guitarist Nguyên Lê as guest musicians. In November 2010 she took part in the JazzFest Berlin with her trio .

Bonacina has received a number of prizes as a saxophonist in the fields of classical and jazz, such as the Concours national de jazz de la Défense or the Festival Jazz - La Ciotat . Between 2017 and 2019 she was named as the "Rising Star" in the Down Beat critics' poll every year. In 2019 she won the audience award of the BMW Welt Jazz Award with her Crystal Quartet .
