La Défense Jazz Festival

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

La Defense Jazz Festival is since 1977 existing French Jazz - Festival in the Paris region. Organized by the General Council (Conseil général) of the Hauts-de-Seine department , it takes place annually on ten days in June as an open-air event on stages in La Défense and the surrounding small towns of Fontenay-aux-Roses , Vanves , Suresnes , Rueil-Malmaison and Colombes instead. All concerts of the festival are freely accessible to visitors without paying admission.

The festival is aimed at a wider audience than jazz lovers in the narrower sense. This is shown in the fact that not only all jazz currents are included, but also world music , blues , funk , reggae , salsa and bossa nova . Every year between 20,000 and 50,000 visitors come.

The well-known jazz greats of the festival in 2008 included: Herbie Hancock , Solomon Burke , Yaron Herman and Caravan Palace . Musicians Shantel & Bucovina Club Orkestar, Chris Potter , Éric Legnini , Miss Platnum , Sophie Hunger , Brian Blade , Danilo Pérez , John Patitucci , Wayne Shorter and Caetano Veloso performed at the 33rd Festival 2010 . In 2011, the program includes Hindi Zahra , Ambrose Akinmusire , Keziah Jones , Manu Katché , George Clinton , Erik Truffaz , Dennis Coffey and Finley Quaye . In 2011 there was also a special evening concert for the Fête de la Musique on June 21st.

Tremplin Jazz de la Defense

The Concours national de jazz de la Defense (also known as Tremplin Jazz de la Defense ) has also existed since 1977. The competition is an integral part of the festival. Its aim is to provide a critical platform for new developments and professional musicians on the contemporary French jazz scene. A selection of ten formations (or individual musicians) appear in public in front of a jury of jazz journalists, label and club program designers. There are cash prizes as well as invitations to festivals or jazz clubs to be won. Winners will be chosen in three categories: three winners each for instrumentalists and three for the band competition and two laureates for the composition prize.
