Manu Katché

Manu Katché (actually: Emmanuel Katché ; born October 27, 1958 in Saint-Maur-des-Fossés ) is a French drummer and internationally sought-after studio musician . He also appears as a composer , singer , lyricist , percussionist and music producer . His musical focus is rock / pop , but he also plays world music and jazz .

From 2007 to 2011 he moderated (together with Alice Tumler ) the music television program One Shot Not, which he initiated . Short concerts, jam sessions and interviews with changing musicians of different musical styles were presented, sometimes accompanied by Manu Katché on drums. The program was initially broadcast monthly by the Franco-German cultural channel ARTE , later weekly.

Previously, Katché achieved great popularity in his native France as a jury member for the television casting show Nouvelle Star .

Manu Katché grew up near Paris . His parents are from France and the Ivory Coast . After a short period of ballet lessons , he switched to piano at the age of seven ; From the age of 15 he made classical percussion training at the Conservatoire National Supérieure de Musique de Paris .

Since the beginning of the 1980s, Katché has been able to build a career as a studio and live drummer. This is thanks to his independent style and "sound", which is characterized in particular by the multi-faceted use of different toms and splash cymbals in his drumming.

Musical career

In 1985 he was accepted as a permanent member of the studio and his live band by the English singer, musician and video artist Peter Gabriel . The song “In Your Eyes” from the classic album “ So ” (1986) gives an impression of Katché's often song-defining drumming. In 1987 he recorded his second solo album “… nothing like the sun” with Sting , where his filigree, groovy playing style was in the foreground.

Several hundred studio recordings and several live tours for Peter Gabriel, Sting and various other artists, including Joni Mitchell , Dire Straits , Simple Minds , Tears for Fears , Jan Garbarek , Joe Satriani , Tracy Chapman , Joan Armatrading , Al di Meola , Jeff, followed Beck , Tori Amos , Youssou N'Dour , Manu Dibango , Gloria Estefan , Francis Cabrel , Stephan Eicher and others.

Together with Pino Palladino ( electric bass ) and Dominic Miller ( guitar ), Manu Katché forms a trio that has appeared as a rhythm section on numerous recordings; the casual band of the three is called The Tweeters .

In 1991 Manu Katché recorded his first solo album (mainly composed of his own compositions), "It's About Time", with the participation of Peter Gabriel, Branford Marsalis , Sting and others.

In September 2005 his second solo album "Neighborhood" followed on the German label ECM , recorded in close artistic collaboration with the music producer Manfred Eicher . Katché's own compositions were performed by the saxophonist Jan Garbarek, as well as the Polish musicians Tomasz Stańko ( trumpet ), Marcin Wasilewski ( piano ) and Sławomir Kurkiewicz ( double bass ). This album was awarded the German Record Critics' Prize for Jazz Album of the Year 2006 .

In September 2007 his third solo album “Playground” was released, also on ECM, with a partly different line-up compared to “Neighborhood”.

His fourth album "Third Round" (ECM) was released in March 2010 with another line-up, for example Pino Palladino ( electric bass ) and Jason Rebello ( piano ).

In October 2012 his fifth album "Manu Katché" was released, again on ECM. The Norwegians Nils Petter Molvær (trumpet) and Tore Brunborg (saxophone) as well as the British keyboardist Jim Watson (piano, Hammond organ ) worked on it. The latter often took on the role of bassist for the album - which Katché did without. In 2014, Katché's first album was released on ACT Music as a live recording of a concert, recorded at the Paris Club New Morning with the line-up of Katché (drums), Jim Watson (organ, piano), Tore Brunford (saxophone) and Luca Aquino (trumpet).

Manu Katché is an advertising partner ( endorser ) for the drum kit manufacturer Yamaha and the cymbal manufacturer Zildjian , each with products under his own name. In 2016 Rolling Stone listed him as 57th of the 100 best drummers of all time .
