Francis Christian Cabrel (born November 23, 1953 in Agen near Toulouse ) is a French chansonnier and composer .

Life

Bob Dylan's Like a Rolling Stone prompted Cabrel to buy his first guitar, which almost always plays a leading role in his chansons. Cabrel achieved his breakthrough as a singer in 1979 with the self-written song Je l'aime à mourir . Since then it has had a permanent place in French chanson .

His music is characterized by demanding harmonies and often sensitive lyrics, which he expresses with a warm voice and a southern French accent. Even rock 'n' roll , folk and blues that made him in his youth by musicians like Neil Young , Leonard Cohen , Jimi Hendrix and especially Bob Dylan -influenced, dominated his work to this day. His texts are about life, way of life and home, love and friendship, and often exercise social criticism (e.g. regarding racism and bullfighting ).

One of his most famous songs is Petite Marie , dedicated to his wife Mariette , with which he won a radio station music competition in 1974. He then got a record deal with CBS . Je l'aime à mourir , which initially appeared in French on the album Les chemins de traverse , was published by Cabrel in a Spanish version under the title La quiero a morir on the album of the same name, which was released in Colombia in 1980 . A version of this song was sung bilingual by Colombian singer Shakira and was a number one hit in France in 2012 .

La Corrida is a pamphlet against bullfighting from the album Samedi soir sur la Terre (1994). The album was sold 3.9 million times in France and is the second most successful there in the period since 1968. Cabrel was a duet partner of Jean-Jacques Goldman , Daniel Lavoie , France Gall , Maxime Le Forestier , Isabelle Boulay and Roch Voisine . He is also part of the regular cast of the Enfoirés .

Francis Cabrel never recorded songs in English, but occasionally added French lyrics to English songs. He sings Spanish and Italian versions of several of his songs in concerts and has also released them on CDs. He also writes chansons for other artists, including Patricia Kaas and Johnny Hallyday .

Cabrel lived near his birthplace in the village of Astaffort .
