The Hårteigen is a mesa in the Hardangervidda in Norway . He is moh at 1690  . the second highest mountain of the Hardangervidda after the mountain ridge Sandfloegga ( 1721  moh. ). The name Hårteigen roughly means "gray signpost" ( hárr = "gray", teigen = "to show").

In the west of the Hardangervidda , the gray granite colossus with steep walls rises about 300 m above the surrounding plateau. His hat-shaped silhouette can be seen from afar, which makes him, as King of the Hardangervidda, a symbol of the area. From its summit one has a view over large parts of the Hardangervidda; Hardangerjøkulen glacier can be seen well to the north, Folgefonna glacier to the west and Gaustatoppen to the south-east .

The mountain was first climbed on August 18, 1812 by Christen Smith, J. Fr. Schouw and Nils Hertzberg. The ascent takes place from the east side via a largely unmarked path. Hårteigen can only be reached on foot via various hiking trails . The closest is the self-service DNT hut Torehytten , a little further the huts Tyssevassbu , Hadlaskard and Litlos .
