George Clinton (musician)
George Clinton (born July 22, 1941 in Kannapolis , North Carolina ) is an American musician and producer . He is known as the founder of P-Funk and head of the bands Parliament and Funkadelic .
Life
George Clinton was born in Kannapolis , North Carolina , and grew up in Plainfield , New Jersey . During the 1950s, Clinton became interested in music. In 1955 he founded The Parliaments, allegedly in the back room of a hair salon. At the end of the 1960s he managed to achieve his first commercial successes with various musicians under the band names Parliament and Funkadelic.
After the successful Parliament / Funkadelic period in 1980, Clinton continued to work solo and brought out the album Computer Games in 1982 . At the same time he became active again with the P-Funk All Stars , to which many of his old colleagues belonged, u. a. also funk legend Bootsy Collins . However, his fame faded in the course of the 1980s and he was unable to build on earlier successes in commercial terms.
However, the cult status of his P-Funk projects earned him money because they were essential pioneers of sampling technology and this was adopted by their fans. As a result, Clinton received regular royalties , especially from hip-hop musicians , which enabled him to continue his musical career and is now one of the most frequently sampled musicians. The artists who have processed pieces by Clinton or have worked with him on production include Prince and the US rappers Snoop Dogg and Kendrick Lamar, or the German rap duo Deine Favorite Rapper . He also produced various bands and musicians, such as the album Freaky Styley by the Red Hot Chili Peppers . For the song Wolves , which on the album 8 Diagrams of Wu-Tang Clan was published in 2007, he sang the chorus. Since 2014, he has had three CD productions with the band Funky Taurus , the most recent being Hawking Tribute , 2018. In 2006, he had a cameo appearance in the first episode of the second season of the sitcom How I Met Your Mother .
In 2015, the Rolling Stone listed Clinton 58th among the 100 best songwriters of all time .
