history
In 1906 the entrepreneur JW Cannon bought land in the region and opened a textile factory in 1908. The name of the place was chosen based on the Cannon Mills Company . As early as 1914, the factory was considered the world's largest producer of towels and bed linen. It was bought by entrepreneur David Murdock in 1982 . When Kannapolis became independent as "city" in 1984, around 30,000 people worked in the textile factory. In 1997 it was acquired by the Pillowtex Corporation. The textile industry remained an important branch of the economy in the region until the beginning of the 21st century . Due to globalization with the emigration of the textile industry abroad, the factory had to be closed in 2003.
In 2004, David Murdock had the North Carolina Research Campus (NCRC) built on the site of the textile factory as a new economic center. This is a public organization as well as a privately run research center, which is located on a 140-hectare site. It conducts research in partnership with various private companies, universities and health care organizations, primarily in the fields of cell biology , DNA sequencing , metabolism , human health and nutrition, and agriculture.
Kannapolis has a long tradition in automobile racing. The Haas F1 Team and the Stewart Haas Racing Team are based in the city.
Architecturally interesting buildings such as the Harvey Jeremiah Peeler House and the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame shape the cityscape.
