To Pimp a Butterfly is the third studio album by the American rapper Kendrick Lamar . It was released on March 16, 2015 via the independent labels Top Dawg and Aftermath Entertainment as well as the Universal subsidiary Interscope Records .
To Pimp a Butterfly was awarded a total of five Grammy Awards , for best rap album , best rap performance , twice for best rap song and for best rap collaboration .
